  1. Emerald mining helps give people jobs and a source of income. Emerald mining creates many different jobs because people have to physically go out and make the the mine. Also people have to go in the mines and find the gems. Lastly, people have to cut and clean the emeralds so they can be used for jewelry. Emerald mining creates at least fifty jobs for people which is beneficial in an economy where jobs are scarce and unemployment rates are high. Emerald mining also creates a source for income for all these people who now have jobs. Emeralds by themselves aren't really worth much until they are cleaned up and polished. Once this happens, their value at least triples creating a good source of income for the people working to mine the emeralds. This increase in payment affects the economy in a positive way by putting more money in circulation helping stop inflation. Emerald mining affects the environment by destroying habitats and altering the landscape once the mines are abandoned. To first create the mines, vegetation and soil is up turned. If trees where in the area, they are cut down. This destroys the habitats for any of the animals that relied on the vegetation for food or for the trees as a home. Animals no longer have a home or the same amount of food available creating more competition for food and shelter within that ecosystem. The animals here would soon start to decrease in number. After the mines have been used and abandoned, they alter what's left of the environment. This necessarily isn't always a bad thing though. For example, look at the Crabtree Emerald Mine in North Carolina. The shafts here for this mine were abandoned and filled with water to prevent accidents of people falling in them or harmful substances rising to the surface. Some of these shafts are over 200 ft deep! Once all the shafts filled with water, the environment can be changed into a pond. These new ponds in the environment can create freshwater ecosystems.
